Description:

Management of odontogenic pain may be accomplished through a clinical approach that successfully incorporates intraoperative local anesthesia. Thorough knowledge of the pharmacology and therapeutics of local anesthetic agents is essential for their safe and effective use. This program provides attendees with an overview of local anesthetic agents commonly used in dental practice. By using case scenarios, particular emphasis is given to developing strategies and techniques essential to individualize patient care and assess the efficacy of local anesthetic agents.

This seminar reviews the various signs, symptoms, and other aspects of substance use disorders in the oral cavity. Attendees learn how to recognize oral manifestations of a substance use disorder, modify treatment plans as needed, and open a dialogue with their patients and provide resources and support.

Tongue and lip ties can cause infants to have swallowing, feeding, airway issues, malocclusions, and speech issues. This seminar walks the clinician through the indications, procedures, and benefits of both labial and lingual frenectomies as an early intervention using a CO2 Laser.

MENTAL HEALTH AND WELLNESS IN THE DENTAL HYGIENE PROFESSION
This seminar gives an overview of stress and stress management in the dental hygiene field. Discussions include the most common types of stress experienced in a dental practice and the actions we take, increasing or reducing them. With the ever-changing environment in the health care field (especially with recent events), acknowledging stress and anxiety in the dental field and learning how to cope will improve the dental hygienist’s mental health and increase enjoyment in our daily lives. Discussions include triggers and how our behavior can impact our stress level and evaluate our stresses. Learn how humor and a supportive environment are beneficial to the dental professional and patient and how working in an anxiety/fear-based profession adds to our anxiety levels.

CANNABIS AND ITS CLINICAL DENTAL IMPLICATIONS 

Many states have legalized cannabis (marijuana) for medical use and recreational purposes. It is promoted as a replacement for opioids in the treatment of pain and even as a substitute for opioids in addiction treatment. Yet, due to its status as a Schedule I substance, there has been relatively little research regarding cannabis and its medicinal uses, especially in dentistry. This presentation introduces the dental professional to the most current information regarding cannabis, including its various dosage forms, routes of administration, adverse effects, and effects on dental treatment.

SLEEP, SLEEP APNEA AND THEIR ASSOCIATION TO PERIODONTAL DISEASE
Sleep is an integral component of our overall health, and in recent years there has been a growing body of evidence directly linking sleep loss to periodontal disease. This presentation explores the sleep loss initiated inflammatory response, which results in an increased risk for periodontal disease. Participants will understand how sleep loss modifies mediators of inflammation within the body, how the incidence of sleep disorders has increased since the advent of COVID-19, and the resulting impact on oral health.
