Description:

Pediatric patients present unique challenges in dental care especially when it comes to pharmacology. Unlike adults, children are not simply “small adults,” and the principles of adult pharmacotherapeutics do not always apply. This course explores the vulnerabilities of pediatric patients to drug interactions, adverse reactions, toxicity, and contraindications. Dental professionals will gain a deeper understanding of commonly prescribed and over-the-counter medications in pediatric medicine, as well as the growing concerns around substance use among youth. By recognizing these critical factors, clinicians can provide safer, more informed care to their youngest patients.

Description:

Effective management of odontogenic pain is a cornerstone of dental practice, and local anesthesia plays a critical role in patient comfort and care. However, improper administration of local anesthetics can lead to serious, even life-threatening, systemic complications. This course provides a comprehensive review of the pharmacology and therapeutic application of local anesthetic agents commonly used in dentistry. Through case-based learn- ing, participants will explore how to assess patient needs, safely administer anesthetics, and optimize pain control while minimizing risk. Special focus will be placed on vasoconstrictors, their clinical indications, and precautions for patients with underlying health conditions.

• explain the basic mechanism of action of local anesthetic agents
• differentiate between the two major classes of local anesthetics in terms of distribution, metabolism, adverse effects, drug interactions, and contraindications

This is often not mentioned during their exam and medical history review. Unfortunately, this may put patients at risk for potentially serious interactions and adverse outcomes. This program provides participants with an overview of the dental considerations of the most popular prescription and non-prescription drugs and supplements that patients use to self-medicate.
