Orofacial and dental pain are highly prevalent global health issues. Clinical practice guidelines recommend multimodal, evidence-based approaches for acute dental pain, with acetaminophen and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) as first-line treatments. However, clinicians continue to use prescription-strength NSAIDs and opioids for mild to moderate pain, while underutilizing safe and effective over-the-counter combinations. This Live Symposium uses realistic patient case scenarios to highlight different causes of orofacial pain and the appropriate evidence-based treatment, using multimodal, non-opioid analgesic strategies. In this unique Test and Teach-style symposium, learners have the opportunity to respond to several questions for each case, after which the faculty present and discuss the answers.
