Description:

The program’s intent is to review the process of differential diagnosis and the acquisition of an appropriate tissue specimen for histopathologic analysis. Participants have the opportunity to become familiar with diagnostic adjuncts, including toluidine blue, as well as incisional and excisional biopsy techniques and suturing skills.

Learn to:

• develop a differential diagnosis for any given oral lesion
• choose an appropriate type of biopsy for any given oral lesion
• demonstrate a surgical technique well suited for any given oral lesion
• discuss specimen handling and management of the biopsy site

Description:

This presentation introduces three patients with the same elevated blood pressure reading on the day of their dental visit. Published recommendations, office policies and what we learned in school may stop us from treating all three, but that might not be the right thing to do. We will explore the science, challenge the concept of guidelines being based on a single vital sign, and look for ways to make a good decision for each individual we treat.
