DIVIDE AND CONQUER: WHY CORRECTING SAGITTAL DISCREPANCY FIRST CHANGES EVERYTHING

Complex malocclusions are often approached by trying to solve all the problems at once. But what if the key to resolving a complex case isn't doing more, but doing one thing first? This lecture applies the divide-and-conquer principle to orthodontics: correct the sagittal discrepancy first, so that everything that follows becomes simpler. Through Class II and Class III clinical cases, it shows how a simple auxiliary approach transforms challenging cases—including some initially considered for extractions or orthognathic surgery—into shorter, more predictable treatments with fewer aligners and refinements. Whether using fixed appliances (braces) or clear aligners, this same strategy integrates naturally into different treatment systems. Finally, the lecture explores the limitations of this approach and explains why recognizing when orthognathic surgery is the best alternative is the true clinical judgment.
